Japanese students training at Chuwattana Gym, Bangkok, Thailand, 2009 Have you ever known you could have pushed just a little harder during training? Have you ever left the gym wondering why you even showed up? I suspect most of us have been there. For whichever reason(s), we experience days that disappoint, days we didn't realize our performance expectations, days where our general motivation lagged. Having lived and trained in Muay Thai in Thailand, I learned an invaluable practice which the general fitness enthusiast and athlete alike can benefit from: the art of not complaining. During training, questioning our trainers was frowned upon, as was complaining, both in our words and in … [Read more...]
10 Ways to Make Time to Workout
It sometimes feels impossible to make time to workout. This isn't just about Muay Thai or Martial Arts training, this is about any sort of training, aka the stuff you could have done when you didn't have time to make it to a proper class. You know how it is, you skip one day, then another, then it's been a few weeks since you made it to a class or off your couch. Obligations, in addition to stress often build up, as do the excuses we make. This is undeniably normal given the (sometimes?) crazy demands of our lives. Often, what'll help us out of our stress fueled, exhaustion laced, excuse ridden black hole is improving our time management skills. So here are ten time management tips to help … [Read more...]
Price Fighter is Amazon’s Fight Gear Store You Need to Know
Finding the fight gear you want online can be challenging. Whether it’s availability, pricing, or delivery wait times to deal with, the right mix doesn’t always happen. In the past, I’ve ordered directly from Thailand because I couldn’t find gear in my size at a price that was reasonable. (Fight gear pricing can get outrageous, and although I like the idea of having gear that I love, I really hate the idea of being exploited.) It took almost two months for my order to be processed, shipped, and arrive at my doorstep. I also didn’t have a tracking number, so I had no idea when it was going to arrive. I just had to trust that my equipment had shipped and that it was authentic. … [Read more...]

From the Streets of Uganda to Champions in the Ring: The Story of Kasubi Boxing Club
I first became aware of Kitunzi Swamadu and Kasubi Boxing Club via Facebook. It was a GoFundMe campaign that appeared in my feed. Boxing in Kampala, Uganda? I knew little about it, but I was intrigued. After reading organizer Mark Jordan’s description of the gym, its boxers, and the community of orphans Kitunzi and his brother Kabonge Salim care for, I was further intrigued. I researched deeper and learned more about Kasubi Boxing Club: the art of the young fighters, the passion of the coaches and the beauty of its community. I immediately contributed to the campaign. Since then, I’ve learned more about Kasubi Boxing Club and its associated KS Children Ministries. Kitunzi and … [Read more...]

Minimalism, Muay Thai, Culture and Identity – My Interview on the All Things Risk Podcast
Interviews tend to be quite a bit of fun for me; this is particularly true when they take a life of their own and organically expand to a full discussion of any given topic or topics. Such was the case when I was interviewed by risk manager and martial artist Ben Cattaneo on the All Things Risk podcast this past month. In this interview I open up a bit more about my experiences, get a bit gritty and discuss some of that which is still considered taboo in the Muay Thai online space. I also touch upon: My feelings on training Muay Thai in the west vs Thailand; My experiences training at Muay Thai gyms that didn't promote … [Read more...]
