Western Mind, Eastern Mind And The Space In Between

June 10, 2011 By Laura Dal Farra 2 Comments

Western Mind, Eastern Mind
Untitled, Harry Callahan, c 1950, MoMA

Excerpt from an email sent to a friend…..

“Please tell me delicious stories of Canadian life.  I’ll call it Canadiana and hold it close to my heart….. I’ve been out here long enough where I’m fucking up English words… i.e. on the TV I saw written in English (on Thai dubbed Bugs Bunny yesterday)….. BOX OFFICE….. Because there is no real transliteration for Thai here, meaning, there is no standard spelling/use of the Roman Alphabet so people spell words however the fuck they feel like it… I read BOX OFFICE as… BOX OF FICE… meaning BOX OF RICE? BOX OF ICE?  What is this they speak of?….

Haven’t quite lost my mind, despite what this email may suggest.”

About Laura Dal Farra

After a six month adventure training Muay Thai in Thailand in 2007, Laura Dal Farra returned to her native Canada, sold most of what she owned, and boarded a plane set for Bangkok alone. She spent the next 3.5 years training in traditional Muay Thai gyms, pushing her limits, and embracing the unknown. Realizing little was being written on the subject, she began to blog about it. Laura Dal Farra is the founder of Milk.Blitz.Street.Bomb.

To be fair, if I was hungry I probably would have read BOX OF RICE as well. Or maybe just see box of rice anyway
