Situated in the Old City and a few minute walk from Thae Pae Gate, Top North Hotel offered resort style accommodation in the heart of the city.
The Room
Clean, spacious with aircon, hot water and a bathtub, the tub being difficult to find in Thailand. There were plenty of staff working to have your room made each morning without a long wait. No complaints.
The Food
The morning buffet was great. The food was a consistent mix of Thai and Western norms and I looked forward to sitting outside at the restaurant enjoying it every morning. The coffee was always fresh as was the juice. No msg if you stick to the Western offerings.
The Amenities
The large grounds of the hotel provided a nice break from city life with a clean, unheated pool and shelter from the noise of the street. There was nightly entertainment in the outdoor bar. If you’re someone who likes to go to bed before midnight, this may not be your spot.
The Neighbourhood
The hotel is ideally situated on Moonmuang Road beside Thae Pae Boxing Stadium, thus being a very short walk to the Sunday Walking Market, restaurants, bars, travel agencies and massage/spas.
Would I Go Back?
Absolutely.
Thinking of Going?
If you’re planning on hitting Top North Hotel near New Year’s Eve (Bemai) or Songkran, I suggest booking in advance and securing your entire trip in one shot. I stayed between Christmas and New Year’s and only booked for a couple of days to test it out. I was able to extend the booking for another, however, the hotel was completely booked, I believe from the 29th to January 1st. After spending a couple of hours inquiring at other hotels in the area, they seemed to be fully booked as well. Foreign and Thai tourists hit Chiang Mai for these two major events and hotels of every price range seem to sell out.
