There are a lot of people writing about Muay Thai, and some, I’ll extend are writing about kickboxing with elbows and knees claiming it to be Muay Thai. To cut through the clutter, I’ve amassed a list of Muay Thai blogs that are the real deal and worthy of your attention. They’re above the knuckle-dragging-in-your face-posturing that far too often is passed as Muay Thai culture in the West. Well, that’s assuming the perpetrators even care about any sort of culture other than what has culturally been merchandised as ‘fight culture’. Ahem….
This post has been updated as of July 2015. From the time it was originally written in 2012 until now, the Muay Thai blogging landscape has changed a lot. The number of people blogging about the art of eight limbs has blown up as the popularity of Muay Thai consistently increases and as it expands to countries where it’s still new. It’s a wonderful thing. So while this post originally focused on five blogs, there are so many more to check out. For a more extensive list, please check out my Travel Blog and Muay Thai Blog List.
In no specific order:
Fight news, videos, interviews, tradition, culture and training technique are all here. The focus is predominately on the Thai, English and American Muay Thai scenes, although others are often found in the mix. Creator Mai has amassed a devoted community of Muay Thai fighters and recreationalists alike contributing to and commenting on the site. My Muay Thai is where I first began writing about my Muay Thai journey.
The blog of Muay Thai fighter and trainer Aaron Jahn. Aaron bridges sports science with Muay Thai giving fighters and recreationalists sound training and fighting advice. Unlike most foreigners, Aaron managed to live off of his Muay Thai earnings while training in Bangkok for over a year, so he’s well versed in many aspects of living as a fighter in Thailand which are often not touched on other blogs. Additionally, he’s opinionated and straight to the point, which frankly, I like. Muay Thai Scholar is one of my favourite blogs currently out there.
There’s no fluff on multiple world champion Damien Trainor’s blog. Damien doesn’t post as regularly as other blogs on this list, but when he does, it’s worth your time to pay attention. You’ll find posts on Muay Thai technique, training tips, fight videos, and general advice you’d hope your coach would give you, but for some of you, won’t. There’s a humility in Damien’s writing that, when coupled with the wisdom it bears, puts him straight on this list.
American nak muay Sean Fagan is intensely passionate about Muay Thai and his blog Muay Thai Guy reflects that. At time of writing, Sean is publishing content almost daily. His site features his own work as well as that of other contributors. Sean’s Muay Thai Guy podcast is one to listen to as Sean is a great interviewer who spotlights interesting people and heavy hitters in the Western Muay Thai game.
Canadian Kru Nick Bautista of Brampton Muay Thai offers much on the martial art of Muay Thai, something often overlooked as focus is generally placed on the sport. Nick is one of Ajahn Suchart Yodkerepauprai of Toronto’s Siam No. 1’s students. Having begun my Muay Thai journey in Toronto I can attest that the culture of Muay Thai as passed down via Ajahn Suchart is something I have yet to experience in Thailand and abroad. Nick very much encapsulates this cultural lineage as he progresses into his own.
